How do you calculate the stagger of a running track?
In my maths work, I need to figure out how to calculate the stagger for a running track. Any ideas?
Unless it is odd, the track normally consists of two straights and two semicircular ends. You measure the radius of the running path (lane) on the ends by noting that the runners stay as close to the inside edge of their path as possible. So each lap consists of two straights and the circumference of a circle of the radius of the inside of the track (or two half circumferences). So to figure the stagger, you assume the inside path will be the measure of the race 440 yards or 400 meters or 1000 meters or whatever. That tells you how far everyone has to run. Dividing that number by the length of the inside path tells you about how many times people will go around. So then you look at what happens when you take that number and compute the exact full laps for each lane. But it will be too long for the race - so you have to subtract some off and the extra is the stagger.
